Understanding Indoor Contamination and Mycotoxins
When moisture intrudes into a building, it can create conditions where certain organisms release byproducts into the air and onto surfaces. These byproducts can include mycotoxins which are chemical compounds produced by specific species that thrive in damp environments. Some mycotoxins are well studied such as Aflatoxins, Ochratoxin A, Patulin, Citrinin, Fumonisins, Trichothecenes, Sterigmatocystin, and Deoxynivalenol.
Many organisms capable of producing mycotoxins also fall into the category of common indoor allergens which often leads homeowners to underestimate what may be present in their environment. The term common allergen only describes how frequently these species show up in buildings not the type of compounds they may release.
Because of this overlap it is important to understand what is truly in your home rather than relying on assumptions. A structure may look clean on the surface while still containing moisture related contaminants that need to be identified and addressed.
Mycotoxin Effects on Humans and animals
Mycotoxins are toxic chemical compounds produced by certain fungi that can contaminate food, animal feed, and other organic materials. While mold itself is common in nature, only certain species produce mycotoxins, and not every mold exposure involves these compounds. Because of this distinction, it is important to understand what may actually be present rather than assuming all molds carry the same potential risks.
Research has shown that some mycotoxins may affect the liver, kidneys, immune system, and nervous system. Others have been associated with cancer, developmental concerns, reproductive effects, and other health impacts depending on the specific compound, the amount of exposure, and the duration of exposure. Different mycotoxins behave differently, making accurate identification an important part of understanding potential health risks.
Animals, including livestock and household pets, can also be affected by mycotoxins through contaminated feed or food. In some cases, exposure has been linked to digestive illness, organ damage, neurological symptoms, reproductive issues, and reduced productivity. Because mycotoxins cannot be identified by appearance alone, testing and proper evaluation are often necessary to determine whether they are present and whether corrective action is needed.

Why Testing Matters
Comprehensive testing provides clarity. Air surface and environmental assessments to help determine if mold, mycotoxins, and other contaminants are present, at what levels, and to inform of the potential health effects from exposure
